Reyne Roman’s Biography

I have been hunting since the age of nine. I learned to hunt from my dad and my two uncles. I harvested my first mule deer, a doe, at the age of eleven, and then downed my first mule deer buck at the age of twelve. Since that first mule deer buck, I went hunting every year with my family and took at least one week off from school to hunt. My knowledge of mule deer hunting and Unit 34; grew as time went by. I became a proficient hunter of mule deer, especially for that area. I concentrated solely in Unit 34, since it was so close to my hometown, of Alamogordo, New Mexico. In 1977 the state opened up the first season for elk in that area and one of my friends decided to purchase a tag. He had no knowledge of elk and their habits, but he wound up killing a beautiful 6x6, that scored approximately 372. I never had a clue as to the rarity of such a bull, but was hooked, needless to say. The following year I bought a tag and harvested my first elk with a rifle. It was only a small 3 x 3 bull, but it opened up a whole new avenue of hunting for me. I went off and on for a few years until the state decided to make elk hunting tag a draw opportunity. After a few years of not drawing, I was convinced that I should draw for an archery elk tag. I hunted for nine years before harvesting my first bull but, I learned a lot about elk and their habits, especially in Unit 34, during those hunts. After 20 years of hunting and guiding my friends to many close encounters, I was asked by an outfitter, out of Ruidoso, NM, to obtain a guide license; and work for that outfitter. Even though I felt I had the experience to call a bull elk close, it was an unknown factor to do it for a complete stranger. Needless to say, my first year turned out to be one of my best ever. My first hunter bagged a nice 6 x 6, which I had called in to about 30 yards distance. And then the following week I called in a huge 6 x 6 that my friend, Pete Silva, harvested. That bull’s gross scored 386 that to this day, is the largest bull I have ever seen on the hoof. I have guided professionally for the last seven years and after contemplating going on my own as an outfitter, I decided to take the plunge and make my dream come true. I became my own outfitter/guide and hence ElkGuyd’s Big Game Hunting Service came into existence. I hope to share my experiences and my hunting knowledge with anyone who is willing to go that extra mile and be concerned more with the hunt rather than the harvest. I look forward to seeing you here and walking that extra mile, along with you this coming hunting season, at ElkGuyd’s Big Game Hunting Service.
